Summary

I am a Research Software Engineer in the Instutute of Cosmology and Gravitation, and have been at the University of Portsmouth since 2020. My expertise is in data science, workflow management and big data.

Biography

I gained my MPhys first class from Lancaster University from 2007-2011. After this, I undertook a PhD in continuous gravitational waves at the University of Glasgow with Graham Woan until 2015, handing in my thesis less than a month before the first detection of gravitational waves in September 2015.

Postdocs followed on from this, in data analysis for X-ray crystallography at Cranfield University (2016-2017), and searches for compact binary coalescences in gravitational wave data at Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (2018-2020) with a teaching position in digital forensics at Cranfield University in between.

I have been at the University of Portsmouth's Institute for Cosmology and Gravitation since September 2020, first as a research fellow in the gravitational waves group (2020-2023), and in my current role as a Research Software Engineer from 2023 to present.

Research interests

For many years I have worked in gravitational-wave astrophysics, and my research interests largely stem from there

  • Extracting weak signals from noisy datasets 
  • Handling big data
  • Design and implementation of data analysis workflows

Teaching responsibilities

Currently, I teach on the second year "Computational Physics" course. In this course we introduce students to the vital programming skills they need for careers in data science and analytics.
